Health and safety managers are responsible for protecting employees—and must balance reporting tasks, compliance requirements, and daily operational pressures. Dustlight was developed to provide reliable insights, simplify workflows, and support real-time decision-making.
Below you will find the key aspects of how to use Dustlight effectively in your role as HSE (Health, Safety, Environment) Manager. However, if you want a detailed step-by-step guide at your fingertips, simply download the HSE Guide.
Two levels of security
Dustlight combines two essential safety levels:
- Level 1 – Personal real-time protection: Every employee wears Dustlight in their work environment. If dust levels rise, the device immediately emits visual and audible warning signals so that the employee can react immediately—for example, by putting on a mask or adjusting the ventilation.
- Level 2 – Data-driven decisions: Each measurement is automatically time-stamped and stored. This allows SiFa managers to check time-weighted averages (TWA), short-term exposure limits (STEL), and particle size distributions. These insights make it possible to identify high-risk activities, verify the effectiveness of protective measures, and prepare audit-relevant documentation.
Device and app setup
- Update & register: Fully charge each device, check for firmware updates and then register it in the Web app by creating teams and locations and assigning devices.
- Configure: Specify material-specific settings (e.g. welding fumes, wood dust), select the display style (smiley or professional), adjust the brightness and define the measurement interval. You can also specify whether acoustic warning signals are switched on or off - depending on the noise requirements at the workplace.

- Limits & warnings: Coordinate the limit values for Time-Weighted Average (TWA) and Short-Term Exposure Limit (STEL) with your internal safety levels and legal requirements. Define who reacts to which alarm level and what measures are to be taken.
- Coupling & roles: Connect the devices to the Mobile app for live monitoring and assign clear roles such as HSE admin, team leader and employee so that everyone knows their responsibilities.
The STOP principle
The STOP principle prioritizes protective measures as follows. Dustlight provides the data that helps you to evaluate and check each level.
- S - Substitution: Replace hazardous substances or processes with safer alternatives and measure exposure before and after the change.
- T - Technical protective measures: Use live alerts and TWA/STEL analysis to check whether ventilation, wet cutting or enclosures reduce dust exposure.
- O - Organizational measures: Link exposure data to time and activity to optimize shift planning, task rotation and zoning.
- P - Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Evaluate whether respirators and protective clothing are effective by monitoring short-term peaks and long-term exposures.

Real-time response protocol
When dust levels rise, quick and clear reactions are crucial. Dustlight uses a simple traffic light system in which each color provides clear and intuitive information:
- Red alarm (critical exposure): Activities that are not absolutely necessary must be stopped immediately. Employees should move to safe areas if necessary and extraction systems must be activated or checked. Team leaders must escalate persistent alarms directly to those responsible for health and safety.
- Yellow alarm (increased exposure): Employees check that their respirators are fitted correctly, check the function of the local ventilation and adjust their working methods if possible.
- Green (no exposure): It is safe to work.
Every red alarm must be documented - with details of the activity carried out, the location, the person responsible and the conditions (e.g. extraction switched off, doors open). This ensures complete traceability and supports both immediate risk management and long-term analysis.
Reporting & Compliance
The creation of compliance reports often costs valuable time. Dustlight simplifies this process by automatically generating standardized reports (PDF/CSV) that include the following content:
- Time-stamped exposure data (TWA and STEL)
- Particle size distributions
- Event logs and corrective measures
- Complete audit trails of who, what and when
From real-time alerts to data-driven insights, Dustlight helps health and safety managers make more informed decisions and implement measures safely.
